In partnership with the Department of Transport and the South African Maritime Safety Authority, AMSOL plays an important role in protecting the Southern African coastline using the Emergency Towing Vessel ‘Umkhuseli’. This vessel, which responds to marine emergencies on call-out, provides critical services including marine emergency response, safety standby, rescue towage, search and rescue, environmental protection, and salvage. Marine emergency response support is supplemented by the ‘Siyanda’ which has provided assistance out of Durban during numerous
incidents this year.
The presentation will cover the following:
An overview of Marine Emergency Response and Salvage – what it involves and why it’s critical
The role of the ‘Umkhuseli’ in protecting the Southern African coastline – highlighting its capabilities, operational reach, technical expertise of masters, officers and crew and its contribution to safe and sustainable maritime operations.
IMO org and other parties involved – outlining key stakeholders and coordination efforts during maritime emergencies.
Case studies or examples – real incidents where the ‘Umkhuseli’ and others have responded.
Participants will be exposed to the marine engineering behind the provision of salvage operations in the South African context, they will be able to appreciate and understand the engineering and planning, regulatory and pratial considerations related to marine salvage operations in the hostile
waters around South Africa.
