SAIMENA Cape Branch meeting: Composites in the Marine Industry

2025-06-26

The SAIMENA Cape Branch invites you to attend the following meeting:
Meeting: Cape 2025-04 Branch meeting and presentation

Place: Survival Centre, Grainger Bay
Speaker: Sarah Virgin
Company: One Eighty Degrees Engineering
Solutions (Pty) Ltd

Presentation: Composites in the Marine Industry

Date: 26-Jun-2025

The talk “Composites in the Marine Industry” will introduce composites as a material and its
mechanical properties that are important to consider during the vessel design and building process.
The presentation will also cover QA/QC compliance and look at opportunities for using services like
ship classification to improve quality assurance for designers, manufacturers, insurers and end
users.
Composites are increasingly being used in design, manufacturing, and repairs in various industries.
One particular industry that is seeing the use of more composites, is the marine industry. However,
composites are still a fairly new engineering material, which means that there are many
considerations
with regards to the quality control and quality assurance of using this material in boat designs and
builds, that are not as well understood by manufacturers and end-users as it is with metal alloys.
