Topic: Seawater Lubricated Propeller Shaft Bearing Systems

Short description of what will be discussed:

Thordon Bearings’ COMPAC seawater-lubricated propeller shaft bearing system is a proven alternative to oil-lubricated systems that not only prevents marine pollution but reduces operational and maintenance costs significantly.  Recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF), the COMPAC solution uses seawater to lubricate the advanced polymer bearing material. By using a Thordon bearing system, shipowners can reduce millions of litres of oil lost annually to the oceans while reducing ship operating costs associated with aft seal failures and the purchase, storage and disposal of lubricating oil.  The reliability of the technology has led a number of classification societies to extend shaft withdrawal periods for seawater-lubricated propeller shafts in line with oil lubricated prop shaft bearings. Under these new rules a seawater lubricated propeller shaft can remain in place if monitoring conditions are met.
